Doing More with the Same — How to Make the Most of Testing Resources

by David Gehringer (DavidG) on 12-05-2008 04:31 PM

I recently posted an article on perftesting.org, an online site for the network performance testing community, that focuses on how to do more with your existing resources.  Here is the intro to the article:
In today’s economic downturn, even successful companies are scaling back. Some are reducing growth, others are slashing their workforce. As companies contemplate strategies to tighten their belts, testing organizations will likely be in the crosshairs. Because testing has so little visibility at the top of the food chain, many view it as just another cost center. Company belt-tightening then really means that testing organizations will have to do more with the same (or less). Yet most QA teams and others already feel understaffed and unable to keep up with business demands. So, how are they now supposed to get the job done?

The answer is simple. To do more (and better) with what we have, we need to think about ways we can do things more efficiently. Then we need to look beyond our four walls to see whether new technology and tool advancements can make these changes possible.

The article goes on to suggest some specific solutions for testing organization.  If you'd like to read more, click here for the full article.

David, great stuff. I had originally read this over at perftesting.org, so I'm glad to put a face to the username ;)

As I said over at PerfTesting we are really into your third point and showing what ways folks can reduce their time-to-test. As you know well there are several just in the automation arena, but also some others in terms of technology and even in product design and a vendors business model.

Glad to have found the blog, looking forward to the conversations.

Kyle,

Nice to meet you, at least virtually.
While timely to talk about more with less I would argue that in our space the idea of getting more testing done in less time should always be in vogue. I think in many ways testing is often left in the corner too long, as mechanism to produce value for a company. As a result of the “neglect” I think test teams often feel confined to keeping testing the same way and not taking advantage of new technology or improving their quality process. Which like many other departments deserve some reevaluation on a regular basis?
